Red Doors tells the story of the dysfunctional Chinese-American family, the Wongs as they live in New York suburbs. Newly retired, Edward Wong wants to a change from his boring life but the dysfunctional family including his three rebellious daughters defers him from that goal. The daughters each live drastically different lives with the oldest Samantha working in Manhattan as an ambitious business woman, Julie the middle sister and shyest of the trio, finds her medical school experience turned upside down at new love, and Katie, the youngest sister who engages in dangerous interactions with her longtime neighbor, Simon. When their father Ed disappears, the sisters are forced to reflect their connections to the family.
The film was shot in 23 days, 10 of which were at the director’s parents’ house in Waterford, Connecticut. Other locations included the Chuang Yen Monastery in Carmel, New York, Dwight-Englewood School in New Jersey, Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in New London, CT, and various apartments and bars around Manhattan.
